Unhappy Difficulty installing Inventor 11 (from network install image)

    Hi All,

I have been trying to install Inventor 11 Professional from a Network Install Image that I created a few weeks ago. I have already installed it successfully on a couple of other machines, but it is refusing to install on mine.

What actually happens is that it gets about 95% or more through the installation, installing all (or at least most) of the necessary files and directory structure, and then does a rollback.

The log file (on the server) indicates that there was a "Fatal error during Installation" but does not elaborate any further than that.

The detailed install log file on the local machine is too complex for me to understand (it is nearly 42Mb of text entries) so I am not able to isolate the root cause.

I have rebuilt the Network Install Image too, but that has not made any difference.

Does anyone have any ideas as to why this might be happening? Any suggestions that I might try?

    TIA,...Jon.

    Hi Jon,

Do a search in the installation log for "error" and see what it finds. Those are the lines we need to look at; it will be alot easier to determine what to do from there.

OK, I tried that, but it results in at least 100 entries being found, most of which appear legitimate entries (e.g. GIF files for error messages, etc.) and it will take a very long time to sift through them all. Any suggestions to narrow it down a little further?

Well, it's nearing 5:00pm on Friday for me, so I guess I'll check back in a little over 62 hours.

    Let's try

    Error: 160

Which may return a 1602 or 1603. we can go from there.

By any chance are you trying to install on Win XP Home? I had something similar to that happen to me on R10. It turned out to be something in the FEA module, although I don't remember what now.

I never found a way around it, aside from upgrading to XP Pro, which is what we did.

I'd also make sure you double check the standard stuff (virus checker off, full admin, etc). Also make sure you've got your system updated. I ran into some issues with outdated Windows *.msi files once. We had to update the system to get the install to run.

Sorry Tim, I could not find "Error: 160" anywhere in the log file. Any other options?

    No, XP Pro.

All checked, and double checked, still no joy.

SP2, plus all other updates, have been installed.

    Thanks for the suggestions though.

    Cheers,...Jon.

    Let's see...

    Try

    .NET
See if there was a failure there, but this is 1602 if I remember correctly

    Error 160
without the colon, I'm not sure if it uses it or not.

    Also

    Error 1723

This would mean you don't have Microsoft Installer 3.1 installed

As an after thought: What if you start from the bottom and go up with your search? In other words, what is the last error found?

Well, I know it's been some time since this problem was first raised, and I guess I must have found a workaround at the time, but it's reared it's head again and I can't seem to find any notes on what I did back in June last year to get past it.

I have identified the error code now though - so hopefully that will allow someone to help me out here. The error is as follows:

    Code:
[3/19/2007 09:27:46] [Error: 1603] Fatal error during installation.
    Does this help?

Ok, first, try these two things and see if it helps:
