    Default Ceiling Creation Issues.

I am trying to create some ceilings under a barrel vault and I have run into a couple of issues. See attached screen captures for reference.

Issue 1. Ceiling A is intended to be the ceiling for the underside of the barrel vault roof. I created it as an extruded ceiling following the shape of the roof. I cannot trim the edge to match the parabola created at the intersection of the barrel vault and the main roof. A roof created by extrusion can be edited in plan using the "edit plan outline" (might not be the exact name) option. For some reason this option does not exist for extruded ceilings. I also tried to create a void to cut the ceiling with but when I try to use the "cut geometry" tool it won't let me selected the extruded ceiling (I can select the "standard" ceilings.) I guess that I could make an extruded roof out of gypsum board for the ceiling but then I won't be able to use ceiling based light fixtures.

Issue 2. Ceiling B follows the underside of the main roof at a 4"/12" slope. I tried to use the "opening" tool to cut the parabola shape out of that ceiling without success. I can use the "pick line" option to create the parabola portion of the opening sketch but the ends of the parabola extend past the edge of the ceiling which is to be cut by it. If I highlight the parabola the drag controls become active but dragging the ends to connect with the ceiling edge lines causes the parabola to change shape slightly. The "trim" command won't cut the parabola either.

It looks like you have two forms intersecting...have you tried "Join Geometry" between them?

Joining just "welds" different components together, it doesn't trim them. The crux of the problem is that I have three ceilings that need to be trimmed to match the opening created by the intersection of the barrel vault roof and the main roof. The extruded ceiling seems to be immune to being cut. The standard ceilings can be cut by modifying the sketch or by using the opening tool but will only accept the full parabola as a boundary. The sketch line of the parabola extends beyond the edges which define the extent of the ceilings. Revit won't allow me to trim the ends of the parabola. Dragging the ends of the parabola changes its shape so that it no longer matches the opening.

One really needs the family editor to get at complex curved forms in Revit. If your ceiling is something that might be gridded, you could build it as a curtain system over a mass, or you could build the ceiling as a component.

    Do either of those help?

The first line of your post set off the light bulb. I had been creating the void as a separate in-place family. The void to cut the extruded in-place ceiling family needs to be part of that in-place family. I selected the extruded ceiling, went into edit mode, created the void within the family, cut geometry, finished the family and violá. The solution to problem #2 (cutting sloped ceiling B) was similar. I selected the void that I had originally created to cut the roof, went into edit mode, used cut geometry, selected ceiling B to be cut and violá for the second time. Thanks for helping me see the light.
