Checking Data In and Out

I have been working with my Civil Engineering firm for just over a month now, and one of my co-workers had started talking about "checking data in and out of a drawing". I looked into it, and you can indeed take points, point groups, and surfaces. It is an interesting feature, allowing for multiple people to be working on one project without the hassle of all but one of the drawings being read-only.

Until we found out you can ONLY do this with point groups, points, and surfaces.

Is there a way to check other types of data (like objects, lines, or other bits of CAD data) out of a drawing and then be able to import it back into the drawing?

I took a look at the Vault client for AutoCAD, and saw that it was for Inventor. We are using Civil 3D 2006 at the office, and I'm not sure if it's gonna work or not. If anyone has some other information on checking data in and out of projects (or variations therof), please e-mail me at < removed >. We have been loooking for a way to have multiple people work on the same drawing and not mess up the file or project in the process. I'll be happy to share any knowledge on the subject I have, as well as my co-workers have.

Vault has been added to Civil 3D 2007. Autodesk is just a little slow at preparing the documentation and updating the website. Look on your C3D disk for the following files:

But they already stated that they were on 2006, which did not come with Vault, did it?

Let me clarify.

The only way to check data in and out is by using Vault which requires C3D 2007.

C3D 2006 allows you to create databases for some objects (points for example) and data shortcuts for others (alignments for example). I would recommend looking at some of the older Autodesk webcasts regarding sharing data.
