Freeze Layers, Save and Close DWG, Open DWG, Layers are Thawed

I'm working in AutoCad 2006. I froze certain layers in a drawing file, saved the file and closed it. When I open the file, the layers that I froze were thawed. This seems illogical to me- I expect the layers to remain frozen when I reopen the file. Is there a way that I can achieve this?

Do you have lots of layer filters in the dwg? If so and you dont use them delete them and see if it makes any difference.

But yes you are right layer states should be maintained between sessions.

Are the affected layers from an XREF file? You may try this thread "Frozen Layers within Xref come in Unfrozen". The system variable would be VISRETAIN.
