Would like to know others experiences with, and recommendations regarding, the new Support File locations in AutoCAD 2004.

Is this an AutoCAD thing or a Windows thing? I am not sure myself. Personally, I hate it, but I think it is a windows thing -- just like they hid the temp directory, which unfortunately one of our programs sends its output to -- took me forever to find it

It's a windows thing. Autodesk had to do this so that they could be XP compliant (or something like that).![]()
I don't like that fact that they do this. I use a folder on our network with most of the support files there.

I don't like it either, but I have made myself live with it since it is now a part of XP. What can help you save time is to create a couple of shortcuts on your desktop to Docs & Settings. One for the All users path & one for your user name. I say both because I'm constantly in both & both paths have different data stored in them. I use these paths since I know they will be the same on any XP machine, which helps alot when it come to customization.
No, I don't either. It has increased my profile size considerably and now it takes about 6 mins to login and to logout.
I don't like it much either, but it is at least palatable with shortcuts in your favorites folder pointing to these locations....
Create these shortcuts dynamically with VBA, VBScript...Read how in this months Hotnews.
So is it a bad idea to move the support, plotters, and plot styles folders to a shared drive and map multiple users there? Will this cause a slow down? We have 5 stand alone seats that I'd like to map the same search paths for to keep things simple.
Thanks,
Jason
That is how we do it, and don't notice a difference at all. But the time saved from having to go around and update everyones computer is huge.

I want to make sure I'm doing it correctly, so this is what I've done. I've copied the Support files from the Application Data directory and stuck those on our shared drive. I've mapped my support files directory to this new support file on the server, as well as mapping to the support folder contained in the Programs\AutoCAD2005\Support folder. There is also a similar (but not identical) support folder located at C:\Program Files\AutoCAD 2005\UserDataCache\Support.
Can anyone shed light on this-what needs to be mapped?
Thanks,
Jason
I don't think you have to worry about the support folder in the UserDataCache folder. Everything else looks okay.
You probably want to copy over the plotters and plot style folders to your shared location. That is, if your using pc3 files and pen settings.
