Is there a resource that can help with writing formulas? I am very familiar with common Excel formulas...

Revit Help files are the place to start. If that doesn't get you going, ask here. Keep in mind that Revit formulas are nowhere near as flexible as Excel. You're pretty much limited to math and some simple logic. That said, you can get pretty elaborate in families once you get the hang of it.
