We came upon this one by mistake the other and thought it was pretty neat. I haven't heard of it before, but then maybe i'm just behind the times and everybody is doing it! Anyway, here it is... (the attached image is a crazy example, but still useful for explaining)
Ever had the feeling you were modelling too much detail in your families, but need it to show up when you cut those detail sections? Well, by placing a detail component of the item into specific views - I'll use an awning outrigger as an example - you can get that added detail when looking at the corresponding view in your project without it showing up in 3D...
Too fast? (i missed that myself!)
1. Draw up the outrigger in a detail component family, and load this into the model family.
2. Place the detail component in the correct location and in the correct view (side elevation, plan etc).
3. Model the outrigger with a minimum of detail, using the detail component as a template for extrusions.
4. Start to add intelligence to how the detail component displays by showing according to detail level, and even more intelligence by including visibility parameters in the original detail compnent. This could include yes/no parameters for showing nuts and bolts.
5. Load into your project and enjoy!!
I would love to know what people think of this one - i know i can see a whole bunch of uses for it... window frames when cut in section actually showing a manufacturer's profile, which can be swapped out?? It has also helped us to keep the model up to date with changes in the detail of our outriggers, for example.
