Question Xref Layers do not retain their settings in a Viewport

Within AutoCAD 2005 and '06, I have this drawing which when I go into the view port and freeze or turn off certain layers, they'll reappear when I reopen the drawing. The layers are part of an xref, if that matters.
Kinda sounds like a specific setting, though.
Does anyone know how to fix this?

    Thank you.

    Explore the VISRETAIN system variable.
