Layer Dialogue no longer displaying Layer information, instead shows big red cross

Technically this happens in Land Desktop, yet I have a feeling this is an AutoCAD error so I'm posting it here. Anyone ever see anything like the attached picture? What would cause it?

Could the XREF no longer be attached somehow?

I'm trying to figure that out! This is what a client sent another individual in our company as a screen shot. The guy that got the email yells "Brian, have you ever seen anything like this?" I came over and started laughing! I really thought for a second it was a joke email.. its not. I'm still attempting to get the facts on if this is an AutoCAD issue or related specifically to this particular drawing (waiting for an email back). I thought I'd post it on here as it has potential to be an educational solution (and doesn't reveal much about the client/project) in case anyone has seen this before and knows what could be going on. I'd suggest re-attaching the X-Ref, but its still an amazing little error...

I missed this post at first... yes, very, very smart guy... he can out VBA most of the people on AUGI... he's one of those guys you go "oh-oh" when he asks you a question because you know you won't know the answer right away because if it was easy he would have answered it. If he asks it I give it instant credibility... I think he asked just because it was so strange even he had no idea what could cause it...

Could the XREF have been overwritten or somehow become corrupted during this drawing's session?

And no I have never seen this before.

Have never seen that either - i doubt its from an x-ref, besides your client can check the xref manager or there are any unresolved attachments.
But surtain is that there is something really wrong with the layers, maybe an error in the dwg database.

Yep!

Actually the more I look at it the more I think he may be pulling our leg, that red X crosses over a spot in the lower right corner that shouldn't be possible.

Still, a funny error...even funnier if it proves true. I'll let everyone know.

Whoa, that's wild. I had a problem (I think it was maybe on 05? ) where that area was blank, but, never seen it with a big red X across it? Wild.
