Default Local file mysteriously changing to Central File?

Is it possible for someone to be working in the local file and Revit changing/switching it without cause to the Central file?

For someone reason, a co-worker swears that he didn't open the Central file and that Revit mysteriously changed his local file to the central file (he did not "save as" because I haven't told anyone how to make a central file.)

Has Revit mysteriously changed the local file to the central file on anyone before?

If he used Detach From Central it would.

He doesn't know about that either. Swears that he just opened his local file as he usually does, worked on it, saved a few times, then tried saving again and wouldn't let him because it was now some how switched over to the central file. with the same naming convention as I had created the central file.

Will a journal file tell you the path to the file that was actually opened?

I don't know how to read the journals. Where do I go to do that? Also, how are backup files created for the central file in Revit? And how do you go about changing the backup file to a Revit file?

    Stinks of user error

If it somehow became a central file, I see no reason why it wouldn't let him save it. After all, you could actually WORK in the central file and save it, as long as no one else is working in a local file that borrows elements from that central file.

Im not sure if its the same everywhere, but mine are at:

    C:\Program Files\Autodesk Revit Building 9\Journals

If you open it, its a huge jumbled txt file, listing the commands your computer went through in Revit. Its hard to read, and it goes through a bunch of **** listing all the computer info and printers... But if you scroll down a bit you can find out if they opened their local or opened a central accidentally.

    Jrn.Command "ToolBar" , "Open an existing project , 57601 , ID_REVIT_FILE_OPEN"
    ' WHC: MFCDocManager::doPromptFileNames
    Jrn.Data "File Name" _
    , "IDOK", "..\..\..\Documents and Settings\arm\My Documents\06478\06478-proj-arm.rvt"

Right there, you can see that i opened a local copy, it points to a file on my C drive.

Of course, its not going to help you fix anything at that point, it will only tell you what they opened...

My first thought as well Steve, If the Detach from Central box was checked, it would become a Central File...

Where is he saving his local file (server vs. local hard drive)?
Is the user using the best practice of adding the word local to file name (xxx_local.rvt)?

Now if you open a file and check Detach From Central, then the file opens with no file name. If you do even just a Save (not Save As) I think it will still prompt you to enter a filename to save the project as. So ask him if that happened.
