Hi,
This question is embarrassing because I've solved it a couple of months ago and suddenly don't remember how I have 'dunnit'...
After creating a mass, how do I make Revit understand it as e.g. 'furniture' or 'floor'?
Thanks,
Axel

As long as you created it as an in place component...just edit the component...while in edit mode, go to the pulldown menu "settings" then choose categories and choose a different category...then finish component...and you are done....sorry nobody responded earlier...I just noticed your questions...

I did go to the mass I've created, went to edit mode, and then under Settings went to Family Categories and Parameters. But when I pick any category, I get a message "Changing to, or from, the Mass category is prohibited. To safely preserve contents and relationships, copy the contents to the clipboard, edit a family in the desired category, then paste."
I did copy the mass, then went to edit mode on the mass that somehow I had been able to define as furniture, pasted it in there...but that's not really what I wanted to do, because now both items are one when I click on them. I guess I also don't understand what is meant by 'edit a family'. Which family? Why edit a family at all? I'm creating a new object, I don't want to change anything...?
(by the way: I'm using Revit 9)
Massing created from the Massing tab of the design bar is meant to be used for creating "building masses" which can then be skinned with walls/roofs/floors/etc using the "By Face" tools that are also in the Massing Tab.
To create a "component" such as a piece of furniture or a door, you must create a Family. This can be done in the Family Editor, or in the project as an In-place Family. In-place families are project specific, and cannot be used in other projects. You create an In-Place Familiy by cicking Component in the Design Bar, and then Create In-Place in the Options Bar. Then you get the list of catagories for what kind of Family this is. After selectign the catagory, you now enter sketch mode, where you have choices for creating geometry, which are the same as the Massing Tools (this can be confusing to new users). You have extrusion/revolve/sweep/blend in both the Solids and Voids catagory.
Build your object using these tools. You can now Edit this Family, and change the catagory from Furniture to something else under Settings if you choose to do so.
Your problem is that you used Building Massing to create the component. You will have to rebuild your piece as an In-place family to assign a catagory.
I got it, I actually got it!
Thanks Scott, it was most important for me to learn the difference between building mass and 'other' masses. I printed this one out - don't want to ask AGAIN in three months or so...
Greetings,
Axel
Well, I am glad Scott stepped in to follow up on your problem...I just don't get the email notifications anymore, and I didn't realize you replied to my post....Originally Posted by luigi
