    Andreao,
Phyllis and David's solution was necessary for a much older version of Revit - in current versions you can easily appy view Filters to achieve dashed line fills that automatically respond to fire rating notations in the wall families.

A good thread for you to review:
    http://forums.augi.com/showthread.ph...hlight=filters

I've also attached a sample file (source was originally another AUGI post, but I can't locate it give it due credit) to get you started.

For some guidance on creating graphic embedded line-based families (for example site utility lines) here's a short video (no audio) I created in Revit 2009 that might help you out:

    Nancy,
Thanks. I am going to try and get my head around how to do the filters. But as usual, there is no time to figure things out, the drawings must be submitted. Thanks again

I have been working with the guys in my company and find that the way fire rating is shown differs. I personally like the filter idea. On the other hand I have plans that need to show the fire tape lines run out past the edge of the wall in different areas.

Another idea, I used a railing family. I started with the baluster family, creating a flat symbol dash. I then used it in my railing family. No rails, you will need to make sure the balusters have a height due to no railing.

I also used a railing tag to read the railing type for notations when needed. I also have a filter that looks at railing names to turn them off in views that they are not needed in.

rross, thanks for adding your method to the mix! We've had good luck with the filter method, and I prefer it over any type of faux-modeling, because I only want it on the certain views, which I can easily control through filters, rather than having to turn it OFF in every view I don't want it in. The filter method does rely on fill patterns, though, which isn't the most convenient mode of customizing in my world.

Anyone else out there got an alternate method?

Our other reason for this strategy is unrelated to the version and unfortunately, is something we still use. We have a local challenge with our area DFS. They prefer the colors and the letter/number designation. Though there is no specific requirement to provide this, we have learned that sometimes, complying with reviewer quirks and preferences is the path of least resistance.

For those who still use these, attached are a few samples of "new and improved" fire tape lines. I had not thought about this post in a very long time. If you can use filters, it is a much faster solution. If not, enjoy the improvements.

Though it appears there is one element in the array, there are actually two. I "tricked" the labels into a position directly on top of each other with a formula so that you only see one label. If you want only one label to appear, check the box for the visibility parameter One Label and it drives two formulas. One ensures there are only two labels and the other ensures the labels are precisely centered on the line.

If this seems confusing, join the crowd. It took awhile to make this intuitive and transparent to our staff also. Our early versions required more manual effort.

Your solution is excellent. This means fewer families to manage. The reason we did not take this approach is because we cannot create a parameter for the color. Unfortunately, we are expected to show the rated walls in color. If Revit ever allows a parameter that will drive a detail component color, we will remake our families using something similar to your method.

    @Phyllis + Patrick...

I came across this thread a while back and I have been stumped at trying to create my own. My first attempt was using the ones Phyllis created as a guide. I can get the array to repeat visibility within the family in development, but when placed in the project, it does not work. I know there has to be something simple I am missing. At one point I know I had emailed a couple of persons in this thread for pointers.

Patrick the one you did is great and I will be picking that apart in my learning process as well. Parameter formulas are a big weak spot for me and I am always looking for good references.

If anyone has a chance, can they tell me why I cannot get this family to repeat once in a project? Thanks in advance!

    Mike
