Awesome, thank you! Here was the problem I ran into: when I would create the formula to look at "Length" it would tell me that it could not use Length in an instance formula for the array. Pulled my hair out... so what I did was draw another dimension line and link it to the existing Length parameter. I then deleted the extra "Length" dimension I just created to keep it clean in the family.

    Unhappy Re: Fire Rating Solution

Now that it is an instance, it is repeating. Looking back at the example Phyllis posted, I do not see how it is limited to 1 array when there is a minimum array of 2 necessary. I have played with the numbers, but I always get at least 2 shown....

    ic349w,
I wasn't able to directly test this, but after a quick glance at your family, I think there is a conflict btwn your fixed dimension between graphics and your # array formula. Try creating your array using LAST positioning, ensure that your LAST position is locked to the right reference plane, and let the #array formula determine the number based upon a length/desired distance (plus a rounding scheme, if necessary) type of equation.

    Hope that helps.

Please have a look at this family. It isn't as fancy with the diamonds and what-not, but we ran into the problem of "how do you represent a fractional number (ie 45 minute rating) with the diamonds?" This was my solution.

Phyllis and David's solution was necessary for a much older version of Revit - in current versions you can easily appy view Filters to achieve dashed line fills that automatically respond to fire rating notations in the wall families.

A good thread for you to review:

I've also attached a sample file (source was originally another AUGI post, but I can't locate it give it due credit) to get you started.

For some guidance on creating graphic embedded line-based families (for example site utility lines) here's a short video (no audio) I created in Revit 2009 that might help you out:

Believe me I am not trying to be obtuse, but simply to learn.

OK, I downloaded your rvt file, and have managed to get your 1 hour, 2 hour, etc. into my available fill patterns.

when i try to apply that fill pattern to a sigle wall, it doesn't work. If I try to change that wall type to generic, 12" masonry, 1 hour, all my walls of that type change, even though I have only 1 wall selected. your method seems to work, as it will also fill curved walls, allbeit all vertically aligned, not perfect, but I could live with it.

I am at a loss, I have a 10 story building I have already designed, and I do seperate Life Safety plans. I simply need to apply filters to walls I choose to hatch them for fire ratings.

    Thx

ok, basically this is what I am trying to acheive, including the room tag. I used this method for life safety plans in ACAD, and I am certain it can be done in Revit, I simply do not know how.

    Question Re: Fire Rating Solution

OK, I think I'm making progress on my firetape. Somehow my length parameter is wrong, because it inserts it into a Project at a fixed length of 28' 6". I want it to be whatever length the line I draw in the Project is. I think I can modify Dave's Curved Firetape to get what I want for my curved walls.

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, can't upload my firetape test project because it's 2.2 MB. The firetape comes in at a fixed length of 28' 6" which I can't change.

    Thx

LOL, I am seriously in the WTF stage of my Revit development. Now i tried to take Dave's curved firetape and alter it to match my failed attempt at straight line firetape. #FAIL. Could someone please nudge me at least toward, if not to, enlightenment stage?

I don't understand why I am spending days just trying to draw a stupid line.

OK, now I created a new project and brought in Dave's Curved Firetape and it comes in perfectly. However when I bring it into the project I am currently working on it shows boxes instead of lines (1,2,3 HR). Definitely in the WTF stage.

I can't upload because all the projects are over 2 MB's, which is rather frustrating.
