    Question GIS Connection

This may seem like a dumb question but how do I connect Civil 3D to my company's GIS database? I know how to do it through the task pane in 2007 Map 3D but would like to do it in Civil 3D so that I can make use of alignments and such. Any help would be appreciated.

I got it. I knew it could be done I just couldn't remember how. If anybody is curious here's how to do it. Pull up the "workspaces" toolbar. Click the drop down menu and select Map 3D GeoSpacial. Then go to view and click task pane and now your set up just like map. This however leads me to another question.

Does anybody know of a way to disconnect the GIS data and keep it so that it's line work?

Assuming that we're talking about FDO-connected data here, select the linework you want and then right-click. Aside from checking objects in/out for editing, there are options to import the geometry. You may not be real happy with the results, though. I did it with GIS-style contours (where the elevation is a data field) and there was no way to get the elevation. I ended up bulk-copying the SDF file of contours into a shape file and using the older shapefile import from the Map menu.
