Default Dim's Where? Your Input on Trans-spatial Use

Does anyone's CAD Standards specify that their model entities are dimensioned trans-spatially (in paperspace)?

Are there any problems that you have encountered? If so, how do you work around them?

No, we don't use the trans-spatial feature. We dimension everything in model space. This is mainly due to legacy reasons - we had worked out a system for taming the dimensioning beast before the trans-spatial feature was available, so that feature offered little benefit for the added complexity of getting everyone to figure out how to use it. Plus, we need to maximize compatibility with legacy drawings.

Generally, our "system" consists of a Lisp function that asks the user for a plot scale, then runs down the list of all dimvars and sets each one, and then defines a parent dimension style with linear, leader, and angular child styles.

Do you work strictly with AutoCAD vanilla? If not, does your company's 'system' also work with vertical products such as AutoCAD Mechanical, for instance?

    Thank you,

yes, just remember to move them if you need to move the viewport.

    Hi

For what it is worth, refer to the following couple of posts for my thoughts on Trans-spatial Dimensions...

RE: Dimension in paper space or model?

    RE: Dimassoc 2 setting

I realise the above couple of posts are rather old... new versions of AutoCAD have been released since... but my view with regard Trans-spatial Dimensions has not really changed ( AutoCAD 2007 still does not have it quite nailed-down as far as I am personally concerned ).

    Have a good one, Mike

We work strictly with vanilla AutoCAD. I can't say for sure whether what we do would work with the vertical products. It would depend on whether those products handle dimensions differently from how AutoCAD handles them. If they just use the dimension objects as AutoCAD generates them, then our system should work with them, too.
