Question Open an existing drawing file through a specific template file

i had few dxf files that i have saved it as dwg file. But i would like to open those dwg files through my template file. What i mean is that when i open the dwg files, i would like to use my template as main the drawing because i have some specific layers set to different colors.

Currently those dwg files open in a regular template files. Is there a way to do this?

What I've done in the past is to open the template and insert the drawing into it; I think the drawing will then take on the layer colors of the template - tho I can't quite remember.

I don't think there is, other than what you are doing; when you have those DXF files, before saving them as .dwg files, insert them into your template.

I know that won't help now, but in the future...

You can export the layer states from the template drawing and save as a *.lay file, then import it back to any drawing. Use Layer Manager under Express tools. I tried AutoCAD Layer States Manager under Layer Properties Manager, but it is giving error if the layer is not existing in the destination drawing. I'm using AutoCAD 2005.
