Where is the Task Pane?

I'm getting aggravated here. I go to Map > Utilities and I no longer see Task Pane in the menu. I go to the help file. It says:
"To hide or display the Task Pane within your current session
Click View menu Task Pane."
I go to the View menu and I see $(IF,??) Task Pane. I click it thinking it'll bring up the Task Pane, but no it brings up the Map Options dialog. Under Startup Options the Show Task Pane on startup is checked, but it's not there when I open Map. What gives? Why do they keep screwing around with things that are fine to begin with?
Can anyone help me out here please?

Sounds like a workspace issue. To bring up the Task Pane enter MAPWSPACE on the command line and select ON.
