Question End Sections for Entrance Pipes?

    Hello,

I have been experimenting with using pipes (No Structures so far) for my entrance culverts under driveways in areas that we have open ditches. We have alot of these type roads in Kansas. I tried this because if I use the pipes I can pull a label for the existing pipe right from the data of the pipe size, along with the Station if I need it.

I would like to be able to use the pipes for my new proposed culverts also but have run into a little bit of a snag. We require that all new culverts be installed with end sections. Would these be a "structure"? Or is this even possible?

I like the idea of using pipes for these because they can be easily added to the profile view and should show up in the cross sections if a cross section happens to fall in the middle of a driveway.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Daryl

You are correct, the end sections would be structures. They fall into the category of Inlet/outlets structures. The software is supplied with two of these. They both headwalls. One has a fixed height and the other is variable. I'm not sure exactly what you're using for 'end structures' but you could use one of these headwalls and dress it up however you want with a structure style that uses a block(s) for plan and profile viewing rather than the shape of the part itself. A modified structure label would also be needed.

    Thanks for the reply,

So if I wanted the end sections to be "dimensionally accurate" for site specific clearances, etc. would I need a different block for each size of pipe? The kind of end section I mean is just the kind that are tapered down to the pipe size. If I get this to work, do I need a different one for each end? One for the inflow and a different one for the out flow?
    See attachment for details.

    Thanks,

The structure style can be set to scale the block to the dimensions of the structure. Swapping the structure to a larger or smaller size will cause the block to resize. It's like applying a block symbol to a structure that will resize with the structure and over-ride the appearance of the structure itself.

The detail you provided shows two different types of end sections, which you'll probably want to show differently on the plans, so you'll need two different styles.

Thanks for the response. We only use one of the styles that is shown on the sheet that I attached. The problem is that the length of the barrel (the part of the end section that is the same shape as the pipe itself)(before the flare starts) is included in the "pay length" of the pipe. That barrel length changes on almost every size of pipe. Maybe I am over thinking this. Maybe I need to make the structure only the flared portion of the end section. I will work on that. The funny thing is that I went through all this on creating dynamic blocks with the end sections before we started using C3D, and here we go again on trying something else.

I think that in the long run it will be worth using pipes as entrances for the ease of adding them to the profile view.

    Thanks again.

What we really need here is a properly built structure using the partbuilder. I'm sure it can be done .... I just don't understand how it works. I can make small modifications to the configurations and calculations but I don't understand building one from scratch. I downloaded some info from AU 2006 class on partbuilder but its not enough. C3D 2006 help system barely mentions that partbuilder even exists. I had 07 running for a short time but the installation went belly-up and I lost interest when they started pumping out service packs to fix it. .... I wish they gave us a part like this right out of the box.
