    Cool Template File Creation

I'm in the process of setting up some project Template files, using AutoCAD 2005. Unfortunately, the company I work for list AutoCAD 2002 as the official version, to be used for production work............ For that reason I set my file structure to save as 2000. The problem I have is that, I am not able to save that template (DWT), from AutoCAD 2005, back to a 2000 .DWT file structure......... I ended up saving the .DWT file out to a .DWG file, and then converted it to a .DWT file from AutoCAD 2002. That was too much work. I am sure it would be much easier to do if the company was using 2002 but they are not.

Can anyone offer any other suggestions or tell me if I went about creating the . DWT file incorrectly.........

Given that acad 2005 is on the forced path to upgrade
you created your template the best way that you could.
The cross version incompatibility is as designed by AutoDesk
to force users to upgrade, so as not to deal with those issues.

Don't know if this is any use to you now, but the only difference between a DWG file and a DWT file is the file extension. Once you've saved your templates in R2000 DWG format all you have to do is rename the file extension in Windows Explorer. No 'conversion' necessary.

    Question Re: Template File Creation

    David,
thanks for replying. I am aware of the explorer change result. Consider this. If you created a drawing file in AutoCAD 2004 or 2005 file format, AutoCAD 2002 cannot open that particular file. That's a fact. Essentially, I ran into that problem with the AutoCAD 2005 DWT file, in that it was created in 2005 and AutoCAD 2002 wouldn't open it. There is no documentation on saving down a 2005 DWT file to AutoCAD 2002 DWT file format..........so I had to save it to the 2000 DWG format, and then resave it to a DWT format so that the drafters, using AutoCAD 2002 could access the DWT file.

Yes, but I think if you save it as a 2000 dwg, and then change that extension to .dwt, it will be a 2000 dwt, which 2002 will be able to open.

Outside of that, you have to continue doing it the way you are doing it until the rest of the company upgrades to 2005, or get your hands on a copy of 2002 to create your templates.

Why not change the official version to 2005?
