I usually create a sphere with a half circle and a revolve. A couple of suggestions on constraining would be to lock the sphere at the origin. Then you can use origin planes to help you locate the part.

    Here's a sphere I threw together in R11.

I've always done the Half a circle-revolve method. Kindof a pain, but if you will be using it alot make it an I-Part

No need to create iPart (or iFeature)

Standard geometry is built into Autodesk Inventor Content Center.
    Start a new iam.
Create a blank ipt component in the iam.
Expand the ipt origin folder so that you can see the base workplanes in the browser. (This step is not needed if you are adding features to an existing part.)
    With the assembly level active
    select Place from Content Center
Select geometry shape and enter size.
Click the ipt workplane (or face of existing part).
You will see a sketch of the feature or can still edit size or location.
Exit sketch and your standard feature is created.
