XREF MODIFY

I am in an AutoCAD drawing which has a Referenced drawing attached. Inside that referenced drawing are dimensions strings. The dimension strings are defined so that the text is a different color than the dimension and extension lines, obviously for plot effect.

I am able to "grey-out" all objects with colors defined BYLAYER. I cannot get my dimension text will not "grey-out" because the color is an override.

Has anyone experienced this problem, and can you help me figure out how to overcome it.

If it's not bylayer in the original drawing, you can't change it. You will need to go into the original and change them to bylayer.

I beleive that if one issues the DIMSTYLE command there
should display overrides, these ae coming from the CHILD
xref file, you could edit those overrides in the PARENT drawing
file and effect the change you desire.

Michael,
that technique doesn't work. The dimstyles that are defined in the "child" drawing are not editable from the "parent" drawing. You would have to permanently change it in the "child"

thanks for the devastating revelation (Laugh). I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place. I have to figure out a way that for some disciplines to reference a drawing from another discipline, that has dimensions, and be able to "ghost-out" the dimension text, along with other object that have overriddden colors

Thanks, I thought the experiment I set up to test it worked.


I think you will find that for inter-disciplinary file
sharing that the best practice will always be color by layer
linetype by layer. This may force you to create additional layers
for maximum control.

I would have to agree with Michael. Color and Linetype set to bylayer. Also nothing drawn on layer 0. I always hate it when xrefing someone else work, and they draw something on layer 0. You can't freeze layer 0 for a xref
