    Lightbulb Point XDdata label or Map annotation?

    I guess that I didn't jump on the XDref data bandwagon fast enough. But we do a bunch of inverting of manholes and typically we get the invert data towards the end of the survey deadline.

    We have stepped up to using Access to calculate the inverts for us, and I know that we can export a Table (with the right setup and links to the point number) to Land. What I thought of doing is setting up a point label to label the Manhole number, Rim, and Inverts automatically.

    Right now we just do a cut and past from the report, then find the matching manhole to leader.

    Is the Land point label the route to go? Or should I just set up a Map annotation label?

    I haven't looked into 2005 yet to see my options.

    Thanks
    Jeremy

    Since you already have the data, and you are a survey firm
    I would suggest a point label style set up to read the XDREF
    to that Access file.
    Then setup a point group with a label override based on the
    XDREF point label style.
    Another thought, if you employ point labels you might not need to use XDREF at all,
    as the point label could be setup to read as follows in the text box for point label:
    TEXT

    MH#
    Rim={elevation}
    Inv={elevation-7.86} The 7.86 would be substituted with the actual measure down to the invert. The text displayed would be rim-measure down as actual invert elvation.

    This information could also be placed using the PIPES tools and would probably result in
    a more intelligent model should you be passing this information to a design engineer using
    Land as well, as then it would plot any of those utilities as conflicts in future design profiles that might cross those pipes.

    If you are using this data for future improvements or developments, I would definately go the route of using Pipes to create the pipe alignment with the inverts to be added later. I use both ends of LDT from the Survey (points) through the final development for improvement plans. Since you already have the data in Access, it should be fairly easy to import that directly into Pipes by setting up your database fields to be read by the Pipes editor. Not sure if 2005 went to Access 2000 or not , but 2004 is still using the 97 version so you would need to save your database to that version. You can also use a combination of VBA &\or XML to extract the data into your dwg.

    as the point label could be setup to read as follows in the text box for point label:

    If I did this then where would I make the measure down change for each manhole? My thought that by using the XDREF I could make the label string something like this:

    MH= {description}
    RIM= {elevation}
    {xdref-inv1_desc} {xdref-inv1_direction} {(xdref-inv1_measure}-{elevation})
    {xdref-inv2_desc} {xdref-inv2_direction} {(xdref-inv2_measure}-{elevation})
    {xdref-inv3_desc} {xdref-inv3_direction} {(xdref-inv3_measure}-{elevation})
    My problem is I don't know the correct way to do the math for the last part. I wish I had more gumption to learn lisp on my own.

    I did do this sort of thing for about 3200 manholes but using map to label the points linked to a massive "SEWERCAD" database. Nice usable map that should be able to be exported to a GIS system. We had all the data, and I jumped into Map with both feet, but Client didn't byte on the proposal. Nice overhead byte on that one!

    But that was tailored for just one big job. I want to find a quick solution for all the smaller jobs inverting about 50-100 manholes. We have the field crews using Palm OS Excel, and filling in the data forms, then bringing the data in to be pasted into access for calculations. But the Cad labeling is the major slow down. Some times "Cut and Paste" is only so fast.

    You do not need lisp, simply put the math in as shown in my example.

    INV= {elevation minus measure down} the resultant will be the correct invert.
