    Default Managing Details

I am importing details from Auto Cad (Door Details, Window Details, etc) and placing them in drafting views. Is it possible to modify the Project Browser to create multiple categories under the drafting views tab. For example, if I have 8 door details they would all be under the door categories tab or do I have to settle for all the details under one tab in the drafting view. Also, is this the best way to manage details?

    Hi mjohns-

You can certainly accomplish what you are trying to do.

Under Settings > Project parameters, add in a Parameter of your naming convention, and make sure its catagory is "Views." I would make it a Text Field, personally.

Then, in your Project browser, Right click at the very top (where it says views) and go to Properties. You will see a box called "Filter." If you go to filter, and can add a Filter that uses teh Parameter you haev just inserted, if you have done it correctly.

Then, if you go to the properties of each of your drafting views, you can enter in what section they belong in, for sorting purposes.

Im assuming youve read up on the dangers of having all of your details as drafting views though, yes yes? Theyre great for typical views and details, i just dont advise using them for sections and the like...

Not Dangers, per se... Perhaps that isnt a fair term. If you talk to a lot of people using Revit, there will be a wide variety of opinions on "how much" should be modeled, and how much should be drafted in detail views.

I personally dont advocate putting "generic wall sections" in Drafting views, as then the intelligence of your model is limited, and you have twice as much work to do. You find yourself having to update your modeled elements for the plans, AND having to redraft your wall sections in the Drafting Views.

For that reason, i prefer as many views as economically feasible (from a time and budget standpoint) to be modeled views.

I use drafting views for my "typical" content such as Deflection Head details, Ridge Vent details, Firestopping, etc.

    twiceroadsfool,

I will be using my draft views in a similar fashion for "typical" details, and I understand where you are coming from as far as using the model in the most efficient and effective manors because I do not want to be overdrawing.

Thank you for your help it has been much appreciated
