Default Void in family cuts face based host?

I am trying to find a way to make a sink that actually cuts a hole in a countertop. Seems pretty basic really, so I assume it can in fact be done. I had hoped to use a Face Based Generic Model, Category changed to Plumbing, then nest a sink. All this because my understanding is that a Face Based Generic Model can have a void that cuts the host. Indeed, in the family, my void does cut the host. But when the family is actually placed, not only does it not cut the counter, but is seems like the family is actually cut off at the top surface of the counter. Before I made the void cut the host in the family the void would show up after placement at full size, but now I only see the lower part when I select it in the model.
Anyone have any thoughts on my current process, or suggestions on other ways to get this to actually work?

    Thanks,
    Gordon

a counter is not a "hostable" object like a floor or wall or roof, so you cannot cut it automatically by inserting a family, even if it is a face-based family.

Question Re: Void in family cuts face based host?

    Hi Gordon- nice toaster.

Were you able to work this issue through?

I have been searching the forums for a good post on circumstances where voids work in families... and in what capacities they aren’t so useful.

It would be great if a table existed describing each of the modeling tools capabilities... (I digress)

i think the rule of thumb here is that face-based families simply align the family along whatever face you place it; whereas host-based families (per Scott) allow the family to interact with the host (cut it if needed).

In the project environment, as Scott says, the voids only cut Host families (walls, floors, roofs). An exception to this is when nesting families, a void in a face-based family can cut another "host" when that host is a solid in a host family. As in this blog post.

Precursory comment to a clarification question about which I think I already have the answer: You guys are great!!

    Clarification Question:
So, there is no way to have a family that cuts voids out of a host plus something else?

    Simple Example:
I want to build a family that cuts out of a host column and a ceiling (or a column and a floor, or a floor and a wall).

Am I taking crazy pills? Thanks for your time, as always.
    Cheers,
    Stephen

So I like to use void cuts on massing elements, and then turn the massing element into the family I need (such as wall, floor, roof, etc.) by assigning that family to the face of the mass.

I actually have a video for you to see what I am talking about, enjoy!
