    Default Xref "circular reference

I have xreferenced several drawings into one drawing. The main drawing name is LVL001.dwg and all the xreferenced drawings are also called LVL001.dwg except that they are in different paths. AutoCAD nicely tells me that the drawing is a circular reference even though it's in a different path. Is there some way I can change this behavior or is this an AutoCAD oops!. I know I can change the name of the referenced drawings, but this goes against my drawing numbering system.

You have to rename one of those xref files. CAD does not allow duplicate names regardless of path. If you decide to Bind the xrefs they become blocks and you can't have blocks with same name. I don't think there is a way around it.

    I hope this helps

I am aware that the xref's can be bind to form blocks. My problem is that AutoCAD sees a drawing with the same name in a different path as a circular reference when it is not. See below:-

    Main Drawing
    X:\Engineering\Projects\AX\SIT\BLD\LVL001.dwg

    Xreferences
    X:\Engineering\Projects\AX\SIT\BLD\CE17\LVL001.dwg (Block Name CE17LVL001)
    X:\Engineering\Projects\AX\SIT\BLD\CE18\LVL001.dwg (Block Name CE18LVL001)

    ans so on ...

It is possible that your xref'ed files contain identical blocks names. You may have to check your blocks in your xref'ed drawings and make sure there are no two blocks with identical Names. Good Luck.

There are no other blocks in the drawings. I think the problem is related to the fact that AutoCAD appears to only look at the drawing name when xreferencing and totally ignoring the path of the drawing.

As "Frimsco" mentioned, it doesn't matter what the path is, AutoCAD doesn't allow you to insert a block or xref into a file with the same name. You need to ether rename your master file or your xref(s).

What do you mean by these block names?

I think Firmso's first point was that IF you were to decide to bind the xrefs THEN they would become different blocks with the same name. Since this mustn't happen, acad prevents the situation from arising by ignoring the paths.

Thanks for your comments, but I am aware of all that as been said so for. My point is simply that if I xreference a drawing called x:\somepath\a.dwg into x:\anotherpath\a.dwg autocad see's a circular reference when there isn't one. I have referred this to my AutoCAD dealer who appears to understand my problem so I will cross my fingers
