Default Visibility of subcategories and selection

Anyone like the way Revit does subcategories when it comes to being able to select objects on them? I have an object assigned to a subcategory and I set that subcategory to off and I can still select it in the view. I don't want to see it or be able to select it, but Revit still allows selections. This behavior is prohibitive to efficiency in this case as it prevent direct selection of the object that are normally hidden by the one that's not visible. Something seems like it could be improved here for workflow reasons, but my first impression is that it would be a major change. Anyone think it's worthy of an enhancement request?
