Here is my toilet, it will hide surface patterns on your walls and floors. I created it by adding detail components(filled regions) to the stock 3d toilet.

Are there significant performance improvements by using 2d representations in 2d views? Having the 3d geometry visible in all views conceals the floor and wall patterns also--right?

You're right Chris, and that's a good question. Maybe one of those Autodesk guys like Joe K. can answer that. Since 5.0, it no longer seems to be an issue.

Chris, you are right the 3d data takes longer to regen, and the toilet is especially complex so you wouldn't want it turned on and it looks very strange if you do(in elevation at least)
