Question AIA Export to DWG Color Settings

Question, probably best answered by the Factory, but maybe someone here knows.

Revit comes with Export settings out of the box for conversion to DWG, with Revit objects assigned to layers, and colors. We are looking at the AIA Export Settings. Question is, how were these default colors selected? The layers are fine, straight out of the AIA guidelines in the National CAD standards, but since the NCS does not have standards for colors or linewidths, how were these colors selected? Was there some thought that Red should plot thicker/thinner than Yellow?

The NCS does list both color and lineweight for over 2000 layers....

Hmm....we have a hard copy of the NCS. I didn't find lineweight/colors in there. I'll go check again.

The NCS is just a collection of standards - one of which happens to be the AIA Layering guidelines (not standards) which set up the rules for layer names. It doesn't go into color/pens. However, if you look at vol. 1 of the DoD U.S. National CADD Standards, you'll see that they have taken the standards to a higher level of detail for both AutoCAD and Microstation. Given that the original version of AutoCAD default settings were based on Mil. Spec. 100 drawing standards (you knew that of course...), I think you'll find Autodesk/ADT using this as a pattern...

Here's the direct link to the documents: http://tsc.wes.army.mil/products/sta.../aecstdweb.asp

I hope you didn't pay for NCS when DoD has them and more for free...

Be aware that there is a new version out. The NCS version 3 is available and the one on line is 2.1. I haven't looked to see if there were any differences though. I'll let you know if I see any.
