    Unhappy Layer Control

Is there an easy way to control insertion layers when using the detail component manager? The layers the components come in on automatically do not work with our company's standards. I am surprised there is not more functionality when it comes to keying layers for the components. Any help would be appreciated.

    short answer: yes
less short answer: takes a fair amount of time to re-map layer keys in the style manager (in your template file) and make sure everything works out the way you want.

There are a couple of things you can do. First off, the detailer uses basically 5 layers: wide, med, thin, fine, hatch. You can simply find these layer keys in the layerkey style you are using, and modify the layer properties for each of the keys. Fairly painless. The problem is, if you are using more than 5 layers for your details, this doesn't help much. You may think about simplifying your standards to make things easy if you are.

Now, the more difficult solution, but also more flexible. If you browse to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Autodesk\ACD-A 2008\enu\Details\Details (US) you will find a whole bunch of xml files. These are all of the "recipes" the detailer uses when drawing components. You can go into these files, find the layer key they are pointing at, and change it to whichever one you would like. For example, a cmu section comes in on "wide" and I felt it was too heavy, so I changed it to use "med"
The problem with this methd is, there is WAY too many files to edit and make it worth your time. It's ok for a few items, but it would be a waste of time to modify everything, IMO.
