Default Generic Model Line Based Family

Has anyone had issues when using this family type (Generic Model Line Based Family)? We created a Kitchen Counter top family and have been using it nicely for awhile now. But in RAC2008 when we grouped a unit plan and copied or mirrored the group, the line based counter top flipped in some instances and not in others.

I just wanted to see if it was a factor of mirroring or if we somehow built the family wrong or if it was just a glitch?

    Thanks

Can't say I have experienced it, but what did you use for drawing the lines? Model, Detail, or Symbolic? Because I think with certain line types they don't always work on angled walls. Hope this helps a little...or at least someone else expands off it. Good luck!

It is an actual modeled object. It happens on more than just angled wall as well.

Perhaps an actual casework/countertop family would work better?

Yeah I would try that instead if you can. Otherwise the mirror command places it on both sides of the wall, same with the copy command I do believe. It isn't flipping it to the other wall when you place it is it?

Yes we have those as well.
I guess what I am asking is are we using the Generic Model Line based Family in the wrong way?
Are they not intended to be use in this manner?

Though we find it very quick and useful since counter tops come in many different lengths. We also have a closet shelf model that we use and it has the same flexibility. It is nice to be able to draw them like lines, just by picking each point.

    Thanks

It is very simple to make "custom" shaped countertop families--
that have thickness, materials, backsplashes, etc--so that when you get ready to detail/develop elevations, sections, etc.--you have the information in all of those views--ahh.. the beauty of Revit/BIM!

The line-based version is very 2D, not very Revit-like, and you then have to draft all of the other views in 2D with lines, etc.

    Just my 2 cents worth.

Think parametric modeling--it is your friend.

    Cheers.....

I'm having similar issues with generic model line based families in groups. Using a simple solid extrusion, I modeled a floor transition strip. After placing it in a group, I got the message that there were identical instances in the same place.

Upon further review, one of them was associated with the level, while the other one was not associated with a workplane....which is odd since I only placed one. I've also had trouble in other instances with it showing up on the level above.

I thought I might be able to fix it by just drawing model lines instead of an extrusion - but the same thing happens.

I've successfully used this type of family before with the generic casework idea floating around here, the only difference being that it wasn't part of a group.

Am I missing something here? Is it part of the whole an object is associated with an element outside of the group thing?
