Default general question about editing families and revit

I have used revit for a little while......those of you that are more experienced i have a question......what was the biggest revelation you had about the power of the program?......i think it lies somewhere in the editing and creating families. Any comments?

Initially, it was seeing how information could be changed anywhere and the model updates everywhere, whether it was through object properties, tags or schedules. After that first realization, the next big thing came with how "easy" it was to create any kind of content in the family editor. We're not limited by pre-built templates but have virtually complete control over what components we create. Oh, and you can make them flex anyway you want them to!

Gotta agree with David here. One of the big thing with content isthat you don't need to become a software developper to create it like ... some other package. Just a little knowledge and common sense.

There are 2 secrets to the family editor.

    1. Just draw what you want it too look like, no parameters at all is allowed. What I mean by this is some families or in early design don't need to be parameterizd. Just make it look like what you want and by magic it usually flexes as you would have wanted. if it doesn't then add the locks.

    2. When creating parameters and constraint always do it between lines of color. Ie locking magenta sketch lines to green ref. planes. When you start using "black" lines for constraints is where problems can start(revit is better with this, but as a rule of thumb always use the colored lines for constraint creation.

The biggest revelation I have found with the program is....well...the program,
Attached a quick "family guide" I used to use when I was training Revit.

    Good luck

For me the big revelation was that the 'magic' of the program is more incredible than actually using it. There's always something that 'doesn't work' which makes me use the more quirkier approach.
The best thing I have found in Revit is the use of shared parameters, which allows you to label stuff with any information you think is relevant and add that information to your schedule. Also, I think nesting families and not being as dependent of reference planes as in previous versions is great.
