Post Using Vault and Survey Data

Came across this, and wanted any and all feedback dealing with it as well as finding out who I can invite to the wedding so that The Vault and Civil 3D can have a happy marriage with our Survey Dept. and Eng. Dept.'s:

"We require the crews to save the raw data .RAW file for each day as a separate file in the server job folder, need to be able store and access those while using Vault.

Similarly, the .JOB files need to be downloaded from the crew to the job folder and be transferred back to the crew each morning. Hopefully the Vault will still allow access to those files.

Typically there will only be a few Assistant Surveyors converting .JOB files to AutoCAD. Most AE's will need to be able to export points from AutoCAD for the staking process.

Otherwise, the points in AutoCAD and drafting of topo should be fine using the software."

    Hardware in Surveying:

Topcon Total stations and GPS units
Recon Data collectors running "Survey Pro" create .JOB and .RAW files (saved in \survey\ folder)
AutoCAD converts .JOB file to .ASC files (PNEZD format)
Data Collection\Input -> Data Collection -> Conversions -> Survey Pro .JOB file Input/Output
Use prototype folders to insert point descriptions and groups into drawing

not really, there's little advantage that I can see for putting Vault in the middle of the process -- about all it will do is allow you to add meta data, and maintain multiple versions of the various files. you'll still need to check them in or out to a network location to do anything with them.

Now the versioning and meta data may be a huge advantage in your environment, and more than make up for the extra steps involved. Keep us updated on how well it works for you. I am curious to learn if you find any benefits.
