Print Range: Visible portion of current window - MY FOOT!

Is there REALLY a way to window a certain portion of the drawing that I want to print? I thought resizing the window and using that “Visible portion of current window” option would do the trick, but it doesn’t. It prints all the way to the extents.

And yes, I did search and I found:

make sure the scale isnt fit to page when you print

I've never had much of a problem with printing the visible window portion. Most of the time, even with the drawing window maximized, it prints the correct area.

The "Current Portion" option sets the lower left corner of your plot to the lower left corner of the window. The upper right, however, is set by the paper size. So I agree with you that it isn't really the Visible Portion. I fail to understand why this has never been implemented. Seems like everything they need is there. All they need to do is put the graphical window select in there.

What it really comes down to is that it does not crop the printed view to just what is visible and this is what bothers people the most.

Exactly. There is absolutely NO WAY for you to window an area to print, (aside from the lengthy task of manually creating a white fill or masking region first.)

Well, technically you can create a view and put it on a sheet, toss the titleblock and crop the view...but it would be easier if the print visible portion of view crop out the portion that isn't visible.

It's been this way for a very long time so you might as well find a workaround that you can deal with. They took the perspective that the partial print was not a formal printing option so it doesn't really matter if more of the view is printed along with the portion you were focused on. Since most people coming from AutoCAD are used to a different approach it annoys them to no end. If you need a formal printed partial view then they assumed that you'd create a view that would persist so it could be printed and presented again at will.

If the plotted area needs to be more precise I will generally create a callout of what I want and then just plot the extents of that view. Once plotted I delete the view.
Just consider it the same as creating your 'window' to plot.

it's really of annoying that what is really simple 4 mouse clicks in say microstation (draw fence, press print, select fit all or type in a specific scale) becomes a 5 minute job in revit

a wee bit of an exaggeration...I used Microstation for a little over 3 years. My wrist hurt after using it, doesn't with Revit. A click count would probably be almost even if you save a page setup first for reuse.
