    Default toilet family representation...

I am building a family to represent the plan and front/side elevations of Lav/Toilet unit for a project. There will be no need to see it three dimensionally but I have been working on creating it as family that has all three view representations in it. I got all of the symbolic linework set up but in plan I noticed that I had since it a wall based component I need to group the lines together so it would move as the wall thickness changed. That seemed to work until I repeated the process in the side elevation view. The linework seems to stay in one place and has no relationship to the back reference plane which it is locked to like it is in plan. It seems to stay constrained at 3" to the center line of the wall and I am not sure why? I am assuming I built things correctly as I just mimicked the on from the Revit Library.

    Any ideas?

As you have no 3D component on which to sit your symbolic line- how about drawing the 2D elevation as a detail component and then inserterting that into your 3D component- where you will be able to lock this new 2D component to the face of the wall- if that makes sense?!

That seemed to work but then I don't have control over the loaded in components as part of the plumbing fixtures category. In Visibility Graphics they will turn off and on as part of the plumbing fixtures but the lines weights will be listed as a detail item.

Any way to get this to all work a little bit more as one? The out of the box Revit Urinal 2D seems to have the lines drawn in the plumbing fixture family?

OK. I've looked at this again. Yes, we seem to be overcomplicating it. You should be able to draw all your symbolic lines in the same family. I think the problem is that you are not getting your lines "locked on" to the face of the wall. Use the "pull the line away from the wall, then snap it back onto the face of the wall and lock the padlock" trick!

Let us know how you get on

I tired that before and just tried again and it still does not seem to work. The items right/left elevation (which are the same) continue to be contraining themselves to the centerline fo the wall remaining 3" off for some strange reason.

I think it would be easier to tackle this using nested components, I created the Left elevation part in a different family file and loaded it into the main family 'lavtoilet combo'
The lines belong to the plumbing fixtures category because the nested family belongs to the plumbing fixture category. In my Revit 201 class on creating families from CAD blocks, I talk about nesting families and how can sometimes simplify the process. Attached is a quick modified version of your family.
    Hope that helps!

Thanks for the feedback. It looks like you just added the linework into the a none wall based plumbing fixture template. Would the best practice then be to create three separate families (plan, front and side elevation) and load each into the main family that would get placed into the project?

I also wonder if that will in any way inflate the file size with three different families?

    Thanks again for your help.

wow, first thread in first search try is right on the money with my exact conundrum!
i need to go and buy a lotto ticket now...

anyway, i have same problem, and would like to know why the side elevation flexes properly in the family when i change the wall thickness, but not in the project model?

i'm using 2008 still, used the "group" method, and am almost done with project. (so don't ask me to "upgrade" please....)
Sometimes, i get lost in my own thoughts and need to ask directions to find my way back.

I have done many plumbing families by combining three separate 2d views. I have created a plan view, front view, and side view.

I then do a fixture family that nests all three of these views. Of course, I set visibility so that each family is only visible in the correct orientation. Both my final and nested families are made using the plumbing fixture template -- not the generic or detail template.

I don't know why this works better, but the nested families seem to flex better for me. Creating all the linework in a single family should work just as well, but for me, it doesn't.

Second thing: You can lock any plumbing fixture to the face of a wall without using a wall-based family. If you do it that way, the fixture won't disappear should you need to erase the wall.
