    Unhappy Parametric Shade Louver

I am having trouble with a family with several of parameters. This is a sun shade that goes over windows and doors. I would like to make it a bit more sophisticated than it is now.

    1) The bottom of the louver casement height varies. In the family I built, the base level was named the traditional "Ref. Level". If inserted in a project with a different level name the Louver Casement Parameter won't show a change. I've seen this problem on families that are downloaded and never really solved it conclusively. Probably something embarassingly obvious.

    2) The bracing offset I can only get to work in one direction off center. This moves around according to the window placement. Revit doesn't like a negative dimension. Is there a way to have it move in either direction from center?

    3) The other option is that I'd like the brace to be able to be above the louver casement with same (or similar) brace offset parameter.

Probably Revit can get all this working in one family, but I've gotten stumped on the offset in only one direction from center. I can make 4 families from this one, but it just doesn't some Revitive to do it that way.

Appreciate your time in looking at it. You're probably all at AU having a grand time.

Without testing any of these, this is (possibly) the answers.

    1. Create a reference plan coincident with the reference level and lock it to the level.
Remake your dimension to the reference plane (not the level).
I always turn off the reference level when making families as we had some issues like this a while back.

    2. Create a new reference plane for the brace, and lock the geometry to it.
Create a dimension to this reference plane from the left hand outside reference plane.
Make a new parameter that adds the "cable brace offset" (which will be 0 in the middle) to half the "louvre casement width), and assign this to the dimension created above.
This will allow positive and negative input for your "cable brace offset"

    3. Mirror your geometry above the louvres.
Adda a "Yes/No" parameter to the visibility of the geometry above and a similar parameter to below.
You will then be able to turn each set of braces on or off, from within the same family.

    Hope this helps

Everything you suggested worked really well. Thank you! A milestone in my understanding of how families are put together.
