    Default slow network access

we recently got a couple new computers in the office and they seem to working great except for one thing - one of them takes absolutely forever to access anything on the network. the machines are identical otherwise. i dont know where to start looking other than thinking its a problem with the NIC - and i believe its an onboard NIC, which means we cant just swap a card out.

    thanks

It doesn't mean that you can't disable the on-board lan and shove a card in, though.

I'd also try swapping the location on your network so that the problem box is on a known good connection.

If in both cases the problem persists, run a packet-sniffing program on the box to see if there are any clues in the actual data/packet types going through the connection.

yeah, i have to try and find a card around here. the thing that gets me is that internet access works just fine. its only accessing network folders that cause a problem.

its also worth checking the tcp/ip packet size, we had 2 machines that oneopened the drwing in 5 minutes, the other (newer) took 20.
it turned out the tcp packet size was a factor of 10 different, one machine used 7000 packets to shift the file across the network, the other 70,000 packets, guess which was slower.
We perform the impossible every day - Miracles take a little longer.

it turns out it was a mcafee setting that was restricting network speeds by scanning everything on the drive, or at least the folder. turned that off and it fixed the issue. ill look into packet sizes at some point and maybe speed things up.
