    This command is usefull for only boundary is not quite closed objects, if wants to close you have to go for PEDIT Command

    It's a pity that acad's ability to correctly determine an area to be hatched has deteriorated so much since R12. It's almost certainly because the modeler core how handles hatching.

    ok very useful but still it will take time to hatch the open polygon
    very risky

    I've given up on messing with the gap setting and such; even when things seem to work, if I tough anything immediately surrounding the hatch, there seems to be about a 25% chance it will go apeshit. So I just close everything off with non-printing polylines, breathe a loud sigh, and move on.
