I'd make a line-based family.
Generic model, perhaps -- you cannot make new categories, just sub-categories.
Check out this thread. Someone may have already gone to the trouble for you although I'm not sure it was fully resolved.

I have created a cable tray with a clearence above the tray for collision detection. I used a generic line-based family and changed the catagory to electrical equipment. The thing is you have to insert the straight segment, then the elbow then the tee. Not like ductwork where you can click...click...click and draw all the needed fiitings by setting the defaults.
I created a cable tray profile and used sweeps to create the elbows and cable tray.
