There were several ACAD packages and the software was installed on individual computers. Several upgrades were purchased. Now it is unclear which CD was used for each installtion. Is there a way to determine the CD that goes with each installation?

It shouldn't matter. The media simply contains the software. You can use any CD/DVD to install. Unless you mean you have multiple products like ABS, LDT, C3D, Inventor, etc.

First, thanks for your reply.
The only flavor of ACAD used is vanilla. There are a couple MS here too, but that is another story.
The problem is not so much the CD, but the key that goes with each installation. Despite getting new ACAD packages, the old ones are retained. In addition, some of the package purchased were upgrades, which require the keys from the prior installation. Also, the CDs for the branch office are kept here also. So thus adding to the confusion.

Media is just media, the discs are not coded individually. You can use any AutoCAD install disk to install ACAD, regardless if its an upgrade or not. The licensing is not embedded in the media.

But what if it is an upgrade? I am trying to install an upgrade from an upgrade CD.
I don't know how to put it any differently, but media is just media, the discs are not coded individually and there is no such thing as an upgrade disk.

When applying the upgrade, there is prompt for information from the previous installation. if the information is not given, the installation reverts to a 30 day trial, although it was installed via a purchased upgrade AutoCAD CD.
I guess I'm wrong. I have never seen that before.
Are these standalone licenses or Multi-seat standalone (MSSA)?

I've seen that, but not recently. are you trying to install an upgrade version of AutoCAD 2004, or are you upgrading to a more recent package?
