Or at least a lighter shade of background when using blue text?

    Thanks!!

Not that I know of. I'll do some checking.
Why is it called common sense when it is so rare?

Well, in mtext, there is a workaround. It is a little cumbersome, but it works.

double click the mtext to open the editor, then right click inside the editor and choose background mask. Check the 'use background mask' button, and choose a color. Now the text has a background.

When you are done editing, you have to right click and choose background again to uncheck the box, otherwise the background mask will show up in your drawing.

The other problem is you have to do this each time you edit text.

This might work. I don't know what color your background is, but go into the mtext edior, then click on the arrow in the top right (almost in the corner). Then go to 'editor settings', then choose 'opaque background'.

Opaque Background When selected, makes the background of the editor opaque. By default, the editor is transparent. (Not available for table cells.)

    Does that help?

It took me a while to get there, but I did!!! Is that what he's looking for?
I started at the not so obvious, then went and looked at the obvious.
