I'd like to touch on this a bit more. What format is the image you guys put in the CAD file? .Bmp, .Jpg, >Tif, etc? I'm trying to find somehting that plots better. We seem to have some issues here with our current method not plotting "readable" (I've learned that the term "readable" is a very subjective architect term, by the way). I was using .Bmp files and then xref them in to the CAD file. But for some reason they plot very ******. Any ideas?

We try to use in order of best to worst: Tiff, Jpg, Bmp

Seriously how long does it take to draw a map that gets the idea across? I have done many over the years and no one has gotten lost on the way to the site.

We stick with TIFs and JPGs as much as possible (and in that order).

I guess it is all just a matter of what people are comfortable with doing. Either way gets the job done and either way can be done fast and effectively depending on the user him/herself.

It takes as long as it takes to make the boss happy. Line drawn maps don't make him happy. CAD Grunt has no say. . .

Does anyone have any new methods for creating vicinity maps?

As we use Civil 3D in our day-to-day operation, we are able to use .SHP files to import into CAD. This creates a nice vector drawing. We have found the NationalMap.gov viewer provides downloads of this type of data for most of the United States. I don't work out of the states to be looking for data outside of them.

So, just trying to see what everyone else is doing these days.
If you have a technical question, please find the appropriate forum and ask it there.
You will get a quicker response from your fellow AUGI members than if you sent it to me via a PM or email.

We also use .SHP files to import into CAD. Tallahassee & Leon County have a joint GIS that makes it a snap. With a lisp command to label street names etc… it takes a couple minutes. Since we reference the GIS data in the drawings anyway not much extra work.

If you are using 2013 or 2014 go to
and download (free) arcgis for autocad. As long as you are working in a real world coordinate system you can use ESRIs imagery or basemaps.
