Question Allow underlays of Reflected Ceiling plans in Floor plans

Revit does not currently allow you to underlay a regular floor plan with a reflected ceiling plan. Why would I want to do that? Because I often want to show roof eaves or other architectural features that are above the cut plane of a plan (sometimes, WAY above). I want to parametrically show these features, but now the only way to do this is to manually trace these elements via model lines, or simply draw drafting lines in your view.

The underlay feature would be far more valuable if you could underlay plans and reflected ceiling plans interchangably. Ceilings and floor plans need to do more talking to each other.

I've often been irritated at having to draft in canopies and awnings and things. It would be nice to be able to underlay them and Revit could even assign these underlays the <overhead> line type.

You can overlay views on sheets to accomplish what you are after in many instances. Here's a quick mock up sample. This is a floor plan and a RCP overlaid on a sheet to combine them so you can show a roof eave, a ceiling feature overhead or even a special light fixture worth showing in a regular plan view (it's a very special 2x4 fluorescent fixture ) The RCP viewport has no title so it doesn't create a problem with the sheet annotation. The linework is using over-rides to change the appearance of the roof above, same for the ceiling and light fixtures. (disregard the Above ABV typo in the image please...I did say QUICK...)

Hmmmm, I've been able to underlay RCPs in Floor Plans by setting the Underlay setting in the View Properties dialog box to your current view. Am I not seeing an RCP? It sure looks like it.

As I stated in another thread, if you use the linework tool (not drawing model lines) and pick eave lines or other objects with an 'overhead' line type, these lines are parametric and move with the lines they were created from.

Mike is correct that you can use "underlay" with current level to display a ceiling that was created as an offset from the floor plan level. Similarly, underlaying level above will work for ceilings created on their own distinct levels.

Once the underlay is displayed, use the method Scott mentions to permanently show ceiling and ceiling based items in the plan view parametrically.

Thumbs up Re: Allow underlays of Reflected Ceiling plans in Floor plans

Well, I'll be darned. It never occured to me that underlaying the current level would show the ceiling.

Never tried that. Works like a charm. Thanks!
