Quad core is mainly marketing hype in the Windows world. Microsoft is having a hard enough time convincing programmers to program in parallel to properly use dual cores let alone 4-way.

The way I see it, split the difference between a speedy single core and a dual core, since dual cores are typically slower. You will at least notice greater stability while multi-tasking.

The think the Intel Core 2 Duo line is the current king of the performance hill. Only a single core is needed, but it's nice having email, etc. on a second core, it just smooths things out.
