    Default Shared Parameters

I am new to Revit and I am attempting to better understand shared parameters and how they technically work. Lets say I create a shared parameter in family #1. Does the shared parameter .txt file that you created in family #1 link to family #2, or is it just a place for Revit to store data until that data is copied into the family #2? To help understand my question a little better, if I delete the .txt file, will my family fail or will it work since that data has already been copied into family #2?

    Default Re: Shared Parameters

The shared parameter file is a way of coordinating information stored in projects, annotations and families. Once that information is in the element - the shared parameter file is no longer used. It is only used when the parameter is created in Revit.

With that said - you will want a coordinated approach to using shared parameters. Once they are loaded they can't be changed without destroying the information they contain.

Do a search here and you'll find some pretty complete discusion of what can and can't be done.
