Revit has always been somewhat tolerant of this and long ago users used to offset a stair sketch by 1/64" to create an all in one sketch. When the technique "almost" works, such as railings go askew is it really working?

Try handing off the editing task to someone else later and see how much fun they have trying to determine which lines are for which portion of the stair. My bet is they'll delete it and start over. Though more work so to speak, separate stairs are more consistent and a bit easier to deal with later. I suspect this is the reason the "myth" of "you can't do that" or "Revit won't do that" has been propagated.
