Opening a dwg file in AutoCAD Civil 3D 2009

We have a drawing that was created in (what we believe is) AutoCAD Land 07 and are trying to open it in AutoCAD Civil 3D 09 but everytime we try the program freezes. The drawing opens fine in plain AutoCAD 2009, and Civil 3D 08, but for some reason it locks up in Civil 3D 09.

Slightly different situtation but same issue topic...
My firm recently put me on 2009 and ever since I've been finding that I am unable to open new dwgs sent to me from outside sources, assumed these files were created in an earlier version. When opening the file I get a message reading "unable to open drawing...contains incorrect or corrupt material...recover command...etc. the technical problem detected is: ___insert file name__" Needless to say my quick troubleshooting for this problem has been to open the dwg in 2008 and just do a 'save as' and then it opens just fine in '09. Why does this happen and how can this be fixed so I don't have to keep working in '08 first?

Probably, the drawing was saved in 2004 format. And it looks like you must continue to do what you are doing:

The major problem I have seen with 09 is that once you open it and save it in 09 is that you can not go back to an earlier version. I opened a few drawing in 09 and then the other person in our office tried to use it in 08 and was unable to use it. 09 has a different way of saving the alignments and sorted so it becomes unreadable in 08. You can see the drawing but can not do anything with it. I had the problem of using older drawings from Land Desktop by importing all the data as XML then reinserting to clean it up in the 09. Maybe that will help you out.
