Question Mental ray material to ducts and pipes - 2009

    Hi Folks-

Working with my MEP partner to get a nice walkthrough of a utility plant… we’ve come across a roadblock rendering the ducts.
Apparently there is no way to apply a mental ray material in Revit 2009 to the ducts and pipes-

Has anyone else experienced this issue and identified a work around?

    Thanks for reading and responding.

Hogwash...You can do this in the Object Styles dialog. See attached.

That's actually a pretty interesting question as we do a lot of exposed ductwork (round spiral, etc). So it's actually not possbile to render multiple finishes, say some exposed galvanized and some painted? Will the paint tool work on duct surfaces?

    Dave,
The Paint Tool is the only way to accomplish that task today.

Ah ok, that would work for us. Wasn't certain it was possible (don't have RMEP installed at the moment).

Following up with a response from the support team:

You can add Mental Ray ducts, but not pipes because of how they are represented in the software.
There two ways to add materials 1. You’ll need to go into Object Styles and choose duct category > material>the material. 2. You can use the bucket tool.

To clarify...does this mean pipes can be "painted" with the bucket tool?

    Jerome,
I've been working on getting better results for this sort of thing as well, would you mind posting screenshots of the renderings periodically so we can all appreciate (and imitate) your hard work?

Our support person is mistaken, you can apply materials to Pipes and Pipe Fittings like any other Category.

The Paint Bucket tool can also apply Materials to Ducts and Pipes if you want to have different appearances.
