Default How'd They Do That? - Parametric Louvers

Ok parametric part wizards, here's a question:

In the default AMEP catalogs, Autodesk included a parametric louver where the number of 'blades' is controlled by the height of the louver (it's really quite nifty).

My question is, as the thread is titled, how'd they do that? Does anyone know how they were they able to control the number of blades that are added based on the louver height?

When I opened up the part for editing, I noticed they had a model parameter named 'Blades' that was set to be the louver height divided by 3, but then I couldn't find anywhere else where they used this parameter (maybe I didn't look hard enough?).

Any ideas on how this marvel was accomplished? Or is it just some piece of black-magic that only the Autodesk Parametric Part Warlock knows?

    Thanks,
    -Brad

    Hey Brad,

It looks like they are creating all of the blades, and then using a "Subtraction" Modifier to delete the blades not wanted based on height.

Take a look at the "Modifiers" section of the Parametric Part.

Thanks Buzz, I figured the 'parametric parts wizards' was your call to action.

I noticed the Blade Subtraction in the Modifiers, but couldn't quite figure out how it worked. I guess it would have become clear if I had made the 'Blade Subtraction' visible.

Pretty clever way of doing it I guess. Unfortunately, I was hoping to apply the technique to create some parametric grilles, but having to make 96 grille slots (48" grill at .5" spacing) in both directions wouldn't quite be the most efficient use of my day. If only the parametric mode had copy and/or array....

Anyhow, thanks for the tip! If I wasn't already in weekend mode (even though it's Thursday) I may have had the extra spark to figure it out for myself.

Wizard... nah - just a humble genius

If I were you, I would not worry about the blades because you are right, creating all of the blades necessary to create all of the available louver would drive you nuts (in Parametric Part land) - of course, you could always venture to the mvparts island...

...or you could buy the ones I made (they have the blades):

I am not finding the louver in the parametric part wizard. I am merely trying to change the subttraction modifier in the parts catalog. This should be the place to edit so that it will automatically create the correct number of blades per height. more specific explanation may be needed for my small brain. thanks

Louvers are not in the wizard...

Go to CAD Manager > Content Editing > Content Builder, then select "Multi-view Part" for the domain and go to Mechanical > Louvers > Eight inch Pitch Extruded Louver

Click on the modify button to the right

Then click Modeling > Modifiers > Blade Subtraction

small brain here too - these parametric parts & mvparts can be a royal pain
