Question Design student needs your help

    Hi everyone,

I'm an interior design student currently enrolled in an AutoCAD course. For an assignment I need to interview some one who uses AutoCAD in their profession, and I'm hoping someone out there can help me by answering the following questions:

    1. Name, location, and profession
    2. When you use CAD in the production process (i.e. preliminary design, design development, etc.)
    3. The types of standardization you use
    and
    4. Advantages or disadvantages that CAD brings to your practice.

Any help you can give is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks so much,
    Kristina

    Welcome to AUGI!
    1. Chris Cowgill, Allegan Michigan, Civil Engineer
    2. I use AutoCAD through the entire production process
    3. We use our own office standards, that consist of a mix of specific layer states controlling what goes on the plans and what doesn't, and a whole slew of LISP routines that control other standards in the background (title blocks, quantity tables, station/offset notes)
    4. As the Engineers in our office do all their own drafting, AutoCAD significantly reduces the amount of time required to produce a finished product, we can use the computer to perform the iterations that would normally be done by hand, and if you need to change the design, modifying CAD objects is much more simple then pulling out an eraser and re-drawing it. CAD also helps improve the communication between Engineering and Surveying, as the surveyors can just export data from the CAD drawing directly to their Data Collectors to be able to stake locations in the field.

If you don't get enough replies in this thread, try the links to other replies to these questions, oh and tell your instructor we said "Hi!".
If you have a technical question, please find the appropriate forum and ask it there.
You will get a quicker response from your fellow AUGI members than if you sent it to me via a PM or email.

    1. Robert Hall, Warren Michigan, Product Design Engineer

    2. When you use CAD in the production process (i.e. preliminary design, design development, etc.)-------application development, tooling design, process mapping

    3. The types of standardization you use-----company developed standard (by me)

    4. Advantages or disadvantages that CAD brings to your practice.
Advantage--building fictional parts helps resolve issues that may happen
in the physical sense. Catch it before you spend money making errors.

Disadvantage--some parts were not designed by my company and do not have
an accurate set of cad prints. Creating cad drawings for internal
use runs a slight risk because the cad data may not match the part.
Anything reverse engineered needs to be validated by taking
repeatable measurement of the physical parts.
