How can I correct exposure only in viewports. My viewport image is so illuminated I can't see anything while in a render is quite fine for now. Here's an example.

You can switch to flat shaded in your viewport. Go to the top left view text where it says "Perspective", and right click on it. Choose "Other" -> "Flat". This should ignore the lights in your scene. If it doesn't then it is due to the graphics card, and you may want to switch from Direct X to Open GL in your Max preferences.
